24 Hours in Mont Saint Michel

In Caen, we picked up a rental car to drive to Mont Saint Michel. We stopped by the Normandy American Cemetery on the way there, which was a really amazing experience. We saw Omaha Beach and admired all of the memorials. In third grade, my teacher, Mrs. Craig, read aloud to us from several books and it was one of my favorite experience of all time, which likely informed my love of reading. One of the books she read was Number the Stars by Lois Lowry, about two young girls living in Denmark during World War II. Anyway, the point of this tangent is to say that I have since been fascinated by WWII so visiting the cemetery was a pretty profound experience for me.

After the cemetery visit, we drove towards Mont St. Michel.

Before heading to the island, we stopped by one of the prairies out front where we got to frolic with the sheep and get some pretty epic photos.

After our detour, we went to the parking lots to drop off our car and grabbed a shuttle to the island. We checked into our hotel, La Mere Poulard, and put away our luggage. Then it was off to the abbey.

We got a ham and cheese crepe snack from La Belle Normand as a pre-dinner snack.

For dinner, we ate downstairs at La Mere Poulard. The food options on the island are pretty limited and as with most tourist traps, the quality was not ideal, but in general, we did enjoy our dinner.
We each ordered the prix-fixe menu. J got the "perfect egg" and mutton while I went for tartare and scallops. For dessert, I got a crumble (which I forgot to photograph) while J got the dessert omelette.

After dinner, we admired the stars (they were so bright and numerous without light pollution).

In the morning, I woke up early to enjoy the sunrise and admire the abbey slowly illuminate.

We enjoyed a few more crepes for breakfast and then we hit the road again.
xoxo.
