san juan day 4

Old San Juan
On our fourth day, we headed out to Old San Juan. We asked our hotel about taking the bus (since it's only $0.75) but they recommended we take a taxi (for $15) instead because of the infrequency of buses. The taxi driver dropped us off at the edge of the district (because of traffic) and we started to explore a bit. We decided we were really hungry so we got lunch at Punto de Vista (recommended by yelp). We ordered a fish tacos with rice & beans and churrasquitos (beef tacos) with amarillos (sweet plantains).

san juan day 3

Plaza del Mercado
On our third day in San Juan, we spent the morning getting some sun at the beach before heading to the Plaza del Mercado. It was within walking distance from the beach (convenient!) so we strolled over to sight see and get some lunch.

san juan day 2

As guests of the Doubletree Hilton, we were allowed to utilize the facilities at a sister hotel, La Concha Resort, which was located right on the beach. The front desk gave us a "permission slip" and we were on our way. After a short walk (15 minutes), we had arrived in paradise. It was one of the coolest, fanciest, spa-like hotels I've ever seen. We immediately fell in love with the place the second we stepped inside.

san juan day 1

We took a car service (Dial 7) to JFK at 4am on Wednesday morning to catch our 6:55 flight. It was precipitating (mixture of snow and icy rain) so the drive was a bit precarious (even in a huge SUV) but we made it to the airport by 4:30. We checked our flight status (on time, despite the horrible weather) and our gate number and dragged our stuff to security. I love the airport during slow hours because security checkpoint lines move quickly.

We landed in San Juan around 11 (no time difference since Puerto Rico doesn't observe Daylight Savings Time) and since we hadn't checked any bags (savvy travelers never check bags!), we hopped off our plane and headed to the taxi stand. There are flat rate fares to and from the airport, and our hotel was in Zone 2 ($15).

We arrived at our hotel (the Doubletree Hilton) 10 minutes later and we were checked in right away even though it was barely noon (regular check in time is 3pm) which definitely warranted bonus points to this place.
