Shenandoah National Park

I just realized I never posted about my trip to Shenandoah earlier this year. I went in May over Memorial Day weekend. J and I camped (we were at Big Meadows, Site 001). It was kind of a challenge to get a campsite (as soon as they opened for booking, they were all immediately snatched up) so I ended up gaming the system a little and it all worked out.

I'm just sharing a few snapshots from the trip. We drove down after work on Friday and stayed in a hotel in Winchester, VA so that we wouldn't have to try and set up a tent in the dark. Then we hit the road on Saturday morning, stopped at a few overlooks before pulling into Big Meadows to set up camp. Then, we wandered around the park (via car); we loved The Point Overlook best (it had a short little hike to a rocky outcrop that had awesome views). In the evening, we built a fire and cooked some Korean short ribs and then went to the Big Meadows Lodge and got some libations and blackberry ice cream pie, which was delicious.

On Sunday, we made Taylor ham, egg, and cheese sandwiches to fuel our bodies and then hiked Bearfence (gorgeous 360 views at the top) and Blackrock Summit (cool boulder field). We had a hot dog snack and hung out chatting and drinking some Shenandoah brews. For dinner, we had ribs and mac and cheese and then turned in early before the rain started. We ended up packing up our tent pretty early on Monday morning in a lull in the rain and then headed home. We ended up stopping at an awesome burger place, Spelunkers (in West Virginia) on our way back; it was so good, I think about it all the time.

xoxo.
